We’re marking Global Recycling Day by sharing some news about our Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme. Just three months after launch, the UK’s first recycling scheme for crisp packets already has more than 8,500 collection points across the UK, from Inverness to Penzance. We’ve already collected more than half a million packets – but what better day to remind the country to keep collecting?

Supported by brand ambassador, Gary Lineker, and Environment Secretary, Michael Gove, the Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme is already the largest scheme of its type in the UK.

Once collected, packets are washed, shredded and then turned into plastic pellets that are used to make everyday items such as outdoor furniture, roofing, and flooring.

“We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s supported this scheme already,” says Fernando Kahane, Walkers’ Marketing Director. “It’s fantastic that so many people have got involved - and we’re doing our bit too - we’ve already collected over 9,000 packets in our office.

“Today, we’re reminding people to keep sending in their packets and earn money for local good causes. Meanwhile, we continue to work towards our target of making all our packaging 100% recyclable, compostable or biodegradable by 2025,” Fernando continues.

The scheme is not just limited to Walkers Crisp packet, it accepts any brand. It’s free and simple to use and those registering as public collection points have the added bonus of earning reward points when collecting 400 packets or more at a time – perfect for community groups and charities looking to raise extra funds.

Sue Welfare, a recycler based in North Lancing, West Sussex, has been the biggest contributor to the Walkers recycling scheme so far, sending in almost 50,000 packets in just three months.

However, Sue hasn’t eaten all 50,000 packets of crisps on her own, she has been championing the initiative in her local community, bringing local businesses and community centres on board as collection points.

This is one of the many positive steps PepsiCo is taking to reduce the environmental impact of our packaging. We’ve recently partnered with Keep Britain Tidy on their Keep It Bin It campaign and the Great British Spring Clean. We will also be reducing the amount of packaging used on some of our best-loved snacks multipacks by 30% by the end of the year.
